For those who wish to continue their safari adventures when they reach the beach, Tanzania’s islands offer a wide variety of opportunities to continue exploring nature underwater. There are many locations that offer diving, snorkelling, and dolphin watching. Swimming with whale sharks and whale watching is also possible seasonally.
Diving: Many of the lodges and hotels on Zanzibar, Mafia, Pemba, and the private islands have their own PADI certified dive centres. There are a variety of dive options from coral walls to wreck dives. For a particularly excellent and remote diving experience, we recommend Mafia or Pemba Island.
Snorkelling: Snorkelling can be enjoyed at most beach locations; however, due to the tidal conditions of some islands this activity sometimes involves a boat trip to find a prime location. Some hotels and lodges offer snorkelling directly off the shore at any time, contact us to find out more about the best snorkelling options.
Whale Shark Encounters: Snorkelling with Whale Sharks can be arranged off the western coast of Mafia island between, October and March. Whale shark sightings can never be guaranteed due to weather conditions and other factors, but generally, the adolescent whale sharks are present in the waters just off shore during this season. Speaking from experience this is an activity that is worth doing! These magnificent gentle giants, the largest fish in the sea, are extraordinary to encounter. Advanced arrangement is advised to ensure guests interactions are conducted responsibly, and do not harm or impede these wonderful creatures.
Dolphin Excursions: Some of the islands off the coast of Tanzania offer dolphin excursions during which guests may encounter bottlenose or, the playful, spinner Dolphins. Fanjove Private Island and Fundu Lagoon, are particularly well known for their resident dolphin pods.
Whale Watching: Whale watching is seasonal and unfortunately cannot be guaranteed due to the unpredictable migratory nature of these remarkable and imposing animals. Contact us to find out more about their migration routes and the best locations to encounter them.
