Rubondo Island Camp - Rubondo National ParkRubondo island is located in Tanzania’s vast Lake Victoria and at a size of 456.8 sq. kms. it is Africa’s largest island National Park. Asilia’s Rubondo island camp is the only property on the island and offers a wonderful opportunity to see the chimpanzees that were rescued and relocated here in the late 1960’s. Since that time the island has served as a safe haven for endangered species introduced over the years, such as; elephant, black rhino and sitatunga antelope. The camp itself, only accessible via a flight over the spectacular lake, is situated on a pristine beach on the edge of the island and is a unique blend of tranquil waterfront beach lodge and traditional safari camp. There are a wide range of activities to enjoy during your stay, as well as, numerous beautiful sites which offer the opportunity to kick-back and relax and enjoy the diverse island landscapes and vistas.

The LodgeUnlike the Mahale Mountains, famous for its chimpanzee trekking, Rubondo Island is easily accessible with a direct flight from the Serengeti. The main areas in the camp are spacious and open with panoramic views across Lake Victoria. Food and service here is of a very high standard with the communal meals generally being enjoyed al-fresco surrounded by wildlife. However, separate tables can be arranged for guests who prefer a bit more privacy. It is not possible to swim in the lake due to the crocodiles and hippos that call it home but the camp has a small swimming pool with deck chairs to relax between excursions.

AccommodationThis small exclusive camp consists of 8 waterfront cottages, including a honeymoon suite and a family unit; all equiped with terraces overlooking the stunning Lake Victoria. Due to the mesh front wall of the cottages there is a permanent view of the spectacular vista along the lakes shores. The style of the cottages is simple, however, they are bright and spacious with ensuite bathrooms, flush toilets together with hot and cold showers.

Activities and AdventuresThe flexible schedule of activities at Rubondo make it a great place to relax after a safari and with its unique beach like location we feel it’s a great alternative to the classic Zanzibar Island end to your adventure. It provides a great finale to any safari for travellers who want to experience more wildlife but at a more leisurely pace. Guests may take part in the Chimpanzee habituation experience which involves joining the habituation teams that work to familiarise the chimps to the presence of humans on the island. It is a wonderful location for keen birdwatchers with over 300 native and migratory species that frequent this island. Fishing and boat trips, during which one might spot the elusive sitatunga antelope, guided drives and walks through the dense forests of this island, are all available.
