There are many ways to experience a safari, and the journey itself is often just as important as the destination. Some itineraries are best explored overland, traveling from one region to the next and enjoying the changing landscapes along the way. Others take you deep into remote wilderness areas by light aircraft, or combine several destinations through a series of scenic flights.

The approach that suits your journey best depends on a number of factors, including the destination, the pace you prefer, whether you would like to focus on one region or explore several, and the style of trip you have in mind, whether traveling as a family, a couple, or on your honeymoon. Budget also plays an important role in shaping the experience. In some areas, flying is the only practical way to access truly remote locations, while in others, traveling by road allows for a more immersive and varied experience.

The Advantages of a Fly In Safari

A fly in safari involves traveling by light aircraft to remote areas that are difficult or even impossible to reach by vehicle. In many national parks across Africa, there are well maintained airstrips where small aircraft can land with ease. This allows you to avoid long and often tiring road transfers and spend more time enjoying the experiences that await in the heart of the bush.
Your safari begins the moment you take off. During these scenic flights, you are treated to breathtaking views of vast, untouched landscapes stretching out below you. From above, the scale and beauty of the wilderness become even more striking, offering a unique perspective before you even arrive at your camp.

Fly in safaris are particularly popular in remote and less accessible regions, where a sense of exclusivity, tranquility, and immersion in nature can be experienced at its fullest.

On a fly in safari, so called full game packages are typically included, meaning that all activities are covered in the price and are organized directly by the lodges or camps. Game drives are usually shared with other guests and take place in fully open safari vehicles. Ideally, we recommend spending at least three nights at the same lodge to fully enjoy the experience.

For domestic flights in light aircraft, baggage is usually limited to between 15 and a maximum of 20 kilograms per person, including hand luggage, depending on the airline. Hard shell suitcases should be avoided. We recommend traveling with soft bags that can be easily stored in the small luggage compartments of the aircraft.

Drive-In Safaris

On a privately guided drive in safari, you explore a specific safari region together with your guide, typically where national parks and game reserves are located within close proximity to one another. Game drives are conducted exclusively by your private guide in a closed safari vehicle with a pop up roof, offering both comfort and excellent visibility.

This style of safari is particularly well suited to regions where distances between parks are manageable, allowing for a seamless journey across diverse landscapes and ecosystems. It offers a wonderful sense of continuity and the flexibility to shape each day according to your interests.

The cost of a drive in safari depends largely on the number of travelers. Safari vehicles usually accommodate up to seven guests, meaning that the more people sharing the vehicle, the more cost effective the journey becomes. For groups of four to seven, a drive in safari offers excellent value, while for smaller groups or couples, flying between destinations can often be a more efficient option, even over relatively short distances.

Optional activities such as walking safaris, fly camping, night drives, or boat safaris can often be added, though these typically come at an additional cost and may need to be arranged in advance.
It is, of course, also possible to combine a drive in safari with a fly in safari, particularly when certain areas are more easily accessed by air.
